Vein Sclerotherapy

reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins

It is said that at least 30% of the Australian population will develop varicose veins at some point in their lives. And while this condition is an aesthetic concern for most, for others, varicose veins can lead to pain, itching and general discomfort that can affect their quality of life.

Varicose veins are the result of a vein malfunction that causes blood to pool in the veins, making them more visible to the naked eye. Varicose and spider veins tend to appear on the legs and are more common in women.

Vein sclerotherapy is a treatment that is designed to reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins, which will improve your confidence and quality of life.

Using our in-depth knowledge of sclerotherapy and a personalised treatment plan, we can help you achieve smooth, attractive legs in just a few months.

What to Expect

If it is determined that sclerotherapy is the best treatment for you, a series of small injections will be used to administer a controlled amount of medication into the unwanted veins. The sclerotherapy solution will cause the varicose and spider veins to collapse, after which they will be reabsorbed by the body.

Sclerotherapy does not require any anaesthetic and discomfort is minimal. Patients can expect to return to work or their daily routine directly after their treatment.

Depending on the severity of the condition, as well as the number of veins that need to be treated, you may require several treatments before you’ll see results. On average, one to three treatments are required per leg in order to reduce the appearance of varicose or spider veins.

Following your treatment, we will provide you with a pair of compression stockings that will need to be worn as directed. Compression garments help prevent excess bruising, prevent blood clots from forming and reduce any pain after your treatment. In some cases, compression stockings will need to be worn for two weeks, but Dr Lowe or one of our experienced clinicians will advise you accordingly.

Exercise will also be an integral part of your recovery. Patients are encouraged to walk for at least 30 minutes every day to promote healing and create new blood flow. Strenuous activity should only be resumed once you are given the go-ahead.

Ideal Candidates for Vein Sclerotherapy

Patients who feel embarrassed by the appearance of or are experiencing discomfort due to spider or varicose veins are ideal candidates for sclerotherapy. Patients will also need to be in good health physically. If you’ve had any problems with blood clots in the past, the reason for the blood clots will need to be taken into consideration before you are approved for this treatment. Unfortunately, pregnant women are not ideal candidates for this treatment.

Once you are approved for treatment, a venous mapping will be performed on your legs so that a personalised treatment plan can be developed.

Vein Sclerotherapy Results

Sclerotherapy is highly effective but it does require patience. The bruising and discolouration caused by the injections can last for several weeks before you will see a noticeable difference. Some of the veins may also darken as your body slowly removes the retained blood.

While your legs may look slightly worse during the first month, your compression stockings will hide them. During the second month, there may still be some inflammation but this will settle and you may even be given medication to help this process along.

From month three, the treated veins will start to soften and clear. If larger varicose veins were treated, you may need to wait up to six months to see your final results.
