Healthy, clear-looking skin relies on effective cell turnover, allowing fresh skin cells to move to the surface. When this process slows, congestion can build, often leading to dullness, uneven texture and more frequent breakouts.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment designed to gently exfoliate the skin, eliminating the buildup of dead skin cells while boosting the rate of cell regeneration. This supports a smoother, more radiant complexion while letting topical products penetrate more effectively. In addition, microdermabrasion is often used to prepare the skin ahead of treatments such as laser or chemical peels.
At Muse Institute of Aesthetic Medicine, we offer thorough consultations for microdermabrasion facials. Book an appointment now and learn whether this approach fits your cosmetic goals and needs.
What to Expect
Once your skin concerns have been discussed with Dr Lowe or one of our experienced clinicians, all makeup and oil will be removed from your skin to prepare it for your microdermabrasion treatment.
Microdermabrasion treatments are painless and will give dull, lifeless skin a radiant glow in 30 minutes. The microdermabrasion device is a diamond-tipped wand with a suction that is moved over the skin in a brush-like manner.
The treatment removes up to two layers of dead epidermal skin cells, which improves blood flow and loosens any superficial blemishes. Think of microdermabrasion as an intense clean and exfoliation treatment for your skin. A soothing serum will be applied to your skin after your treatment to provide it with essential hydration and nutrients.
Since the treatment is not harsh, your skin will not require days to heal and any redness or flaking that occurs after your session will subside within 24 hours.
In most cases, one microdermabrasion treatment is enough to freshen the skin, but some patients may require several treatments to achieve optimal results. To maintain the results of your treatments, one treatment every 2 – 3 months is recommended.
What Can Be Treated with Microdermabrasion?
Here are some of the most common skin concerns that can be treated using microdermabrasion:
- Dull Skin: Boost your skin’s radiance and enjoy a healthy glow
- Blackheads: Get rid of unsightly blackheads without damaging your skin
- Acne Scars: Reduce the appearance of acne scars
- Skin Discolouration: Create a more even skin complexion with the help of microdermabrasion treatments
- Fine Lines: Minimise the appearance of fine lines on the face and neck
- Enlarged Pores: Clear out and reduce the size of pores that make your skin more prone to breakouts
Ideal Candidates for Microdermabrasion
The ideal candidate for microdermabrasion treatments should be in good physical health and want to address common skin concerns and imperfections. While microdermabrasion is great for younger skin because it clears out pores and reduces acne scars, it is also ideal for older skin because it stimulates collagen production and treats sun damage and conditions such as rosacea.
In order to determine whether you would benefit from a treatment such as microdermabrasion, we will analyse your skin and review your goals. In some cases, a combination of treatments may be required to achieve your desired result.
Microdermabrasion Results
Directly after your microdermabrasion treatment, your skin may look and feel smoother and your pores may be visibly clean. Your skin will also look plumper, creating a more youthful appearance. If your skin appears slightly red, this is because of the increased blood flow, which is bringing essential nutrients and oxygen into your skin. We will provide you with product recommendations that will help you maintain your results until your next treatment.
Individual results may vary based on everyone’s skin type, current skin condition, sensitivity levels and how your skin responds to treatment. Lifestyle factors, including sun exposure and your at-home skincare routine, can also influence how your skin looks and feels after treatment. A personalised approach and consistent care will help maintain your results over time.
Aftercare Guidelines
These guidelines are designed to protect the skin while it heals and adapts post-treatment:
- Apply a cool compress if needed to soothe the skin.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.
- Keep the skin well hydrated with a gentle, protective moisturiser.
- Avoid exfoliating products, including scrubs or cleansing brushes, for 7–10 days.
- Refrain from using active ingredients such as retinols and glycolic acid for approximately 10 days.
- Resume vitamin C serums after 48 hours, if tolerated.
Potential Side Effects Following Microdermabrasion
Following microdermabrasion, it’s normal to experience some temporary and mild skin responses as your skin begins to renew.
- Mild redness or a pink appearance for a few hours post-treatment
- Increased sensitivity, including to temperature changes, for a few days
As the skin continues to regenerate, you may also notice:
- Light flaking or peeling for 3–5 days
- Mild itching or sensitivity
- Occasional small whiteheads
These effects are typically short-lived and resolve as the skin returns to its normal balance. If you experience any prolonged or unusual reactions, it’s recommended to contact your clinician for further advice.
