MUSE Skin Diaries – Cleansers

Is cleansing the skin the most effective tool in your arsenal?

In our skin care routine, cleansing your face seems pretty intuitive doesn’t it? What’s the first thing we do after our kids finish their dinner? We wash their face and we wash their hands of course!  So if our instinct is to keep their beautiful clear skin as clean as possible, why aren’t we all doing the same with ours?

Too often I hear my patients tell me that in the morning it’s “go, go, go” and they don’t have time to do a thorough cleanse. Then they come home from work too tired and their night time cleanse is left to a quick wash or the use of a makeup wipe. Well ladies and gentlemen: our skin is our largest organ and needs to be functioning at an optimum level at all times. Your cleanser removes makeup, excess dirt, sweat, bacteria and environmental pollutants such as dust and smoke. These pollutants can become trapped inside your pores and cause all sorts of problems including congestion, acne and breakouts. Skin also needs to be cleansed properly to prepare the skin for our serums. Those active ingredients in serums aren’t going to penetrate through the skin and work properly, if there is a layer of make-up and dirt in the way!

So our first step to achieving healthy skin is a thorough cleanse, twice a day. Yes, twice a day, every single day! Set your alarm 2 minutes earlier and voila, you have found the time to cleanse in the morning!  Keep your cleanser next to your tooth brush and it can become part of our automatic night routine just after brushing your teeth. And I’m going to challenge you even more and tell you to double cleanse in the evening! First cleanse to get the make-up, dirt and pollution off; second cleanse to get the skin primed for your night time skin products!

Which cleanser?

Do you know what to look for in a cleanser? And how do you know when your cleanser is right for your skin type? One thing for sure is that you will know when your cleanser is NOT right for your skin type as your skin will feel dry and tight and sometimes even itchy.

So now let’s walk through different type of cleansers and what skin type they are best suited for:

  • Milk Cleansers

These are good for drier skin types and also for mature, sensitive skins. Apply to dry skin and massage it all over your face and neck in light circular motions with your fingertips then thoroughly remove with warm water. Then moisten a cotton disc with Micellar water and do a second cleanse. Your skin should feel clean and gently hydrated.

A great milk cleanser is the Ultraceuticals Ultra Hydrating Milk cleanser which is a rich milky emulsion formulated to gently cleanse and nourish the skin. You can then follow this with the B2 Micellar water from Ultraceuticals which is alcohol free, soap free and has VitaminsB3 and B5 to hydrate the skin as well as cucumber extract to soothe and refresh.

  • Gel and Foaming Cleansers

Gel cleansers are great for combination, oily and normal skin types. These usually form a light lather that will thoroughly cleanse the skin without disturbing the skin’s natural moisture balance. Foaming cleansers are perfect cleansers for oilier skin types and skins prone to acne. Men in particular tend to like foaming or gel cleansers as they feel thoroughly cleansed after using these.

Ultraceuticals Clear Foaming Cleanser is one such cleanser that works to remove dirt, debris and makeup. It helps to regulate excess sebum production and helps to control surface shine whilst removing impurities and unclogging pores.

Ultraceuticals Balancing Gel Cleanser is also a great all rounder cleanser that when mixed with a small amount of water creates a light lather that is non-stripping whilst thoroughly cleansing the skin without disturbing the skin’s natural moisture balance.

  • Micellar Water

Micellar water is made up of micelles which are tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in water. These act as a magnet to capture dirt and excess sebum. Using Micellar water is a really gentle way of cleansing your skin.  It can even be used alone to cleanse very sensitive skins. You do not have to rinse it off unlike cleansers and it will leave your skin feeling hydrated . A little tip : can also be used when you mess up your eyeliner or lipstick, just put a little bit on a q tip and fix the mistake easily.

Ultra B2 Micellar solution from Ultraceuticals is soap free, alcohol free and does not need to be rinsed off. It has the amazing Ultraceuticals B2 Technology of B3 and B5 to hydrate and nourish.

So you see, cleansing is the first habit of people with great skin. Go on, cleanse away twice a day and your skin will never look better! This is my first in a series of “what is best for your skin.” My next one will be about effective exfoliation methods and which are best suited for your skin type.
