Acne is bad enough when you’re a teenager but it can be particularly frustrating as an adult. The skincare products and acne solutions you once used may no longer work or they may even make your acne worse, which is why it’s necessary to take a different approach to acne as an adult.

Adult Acne – The Why

Some adults experience acne in their 30s, 40s and sometimes well into their 50s, in fact, some people only experience acne for the first time as an adult. Women are more prone to developing adult acne than men because of the hormonal fluctuations they experience throughout their lives, particularly during times such as pregnancy and menopause. However, this is not the only reason why adult acne occurs.

– Stress. A number of researchers have found a link between stress and acne breakouts in adults. When the body experiences high levels of stress on an ongoing basis, it produces more androgens, a type of hormone that stimulates both the hair follicles and oil glands, causing acne to flare up.

– Family History. If you have a blood relative who suffers from acne, it could suggest that you have a genetic predisposition for it.

– New Hair & Skin Products. If you’ve had problems with acne in the past, it’s best to read the labels of any new hair and skin products before you start using them. Look for labels that mention the terms ‘oil-free’, ‘non-comedogenic’ or ‘non-acnegenic’.

– Medication. Acne can also be a side of effect of several medications. If your skin has changed ever since you’ve started taking a new medication, it might be wise to speak to your doctor about alternatives. If taking a different type of medication is not an option, there are other cosmetic solutions.

– Underlying Medical Conditions. Lastly, acne can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition, which will need to be treated before the acne will clear up.

Acne Treatment Options

While having a good skincare regime is essential for keeping oil, dirt and dead skin cells at bay, acne often requires additional treatments in order for it to subside. Here are your options.

Forever Clear BBL is a proprietary, Broad-Band Light procedure for addressing symptoms of active acne. The result is clear skin without the side effects of harsh acne medications or creams.

– Forever Clear BBL
During a Forever Clear BBL treatment, patients feel minimal to no discomfort as the provider gently glides the BBL handpiece across the skin. This process involves 3 total passes of the device over the treatment area.  The first pass uses blue light to eliminate acne-causing bacteria located deep within the skin’s pores.  The second pass uses yellow light to reduce inflammation and acne-associated redness while preventing new breakouts.  To maximize patients’ results, the skin receives a third pass using infra-red light in rapid, gentle pulses to initiate the body’s natural healing process, reduce the appearance of existing scars, and enhance the benefits of the first two steps.

The BBL applicator keeps the skin cool and comfortable throughout the treatment. Afterward, most patients will continue to feel warm for 30 to 60 minutes.

– Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion treatments are designed to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the regeneration process. When your skin is able to get rid of impurities, it becomes easier for acne to subside. Even your cosmeceutical home skincare regime will have a more significant effect after a microdermabrasion treatment. Microdermabrasion is an intense cleaning and exfoliating treatment that helps bring your skin back to life.

– Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are a safe way to remove dead skin cells and regenerate different layers of the skin to reveal a more radiant and healthy appearance. Chemical peels only take about 15 minutes and patients can expect a slight tingling feeling as the ingredients start taking effect. The type of peel that is used on your skin will depend on what you want to achieve. Chemical peels can be used on active acne and to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
